Kiwisport Tennis

This term Room 8 were lucky enough to learn how to play tennis. We learnt how to hold the tennis racket and also how to serve properly. We also learnt how to do a forehand and a backhand. We got so good at what we were doing that we were able to have small games against each other.

We would like to take this time to say a BIG thank-you to our tennis coach Peter and Miss Va'afusuaga for organising our kiwisport lessons. Here is a video of us in action playing tennis, we hope you enjoy it!

Animation Voiceover by Leilani

Kia ora, talofa lava, ola and greetings to you  all my name is Leilani and this is my animation for term 2 2017.We are learning about fishing  and sailing and how it  has changed over the years. When Maori people first arrived in New Zealand they used boats called waka’s. Waka’s were made out of wood and they had Maori carvings around them. Later on when the pakeha arrived they made boats that are called sailing boats and they had sails. Then a few more years later they add  lights, anchors, hotels, engines  and more! Once I saw a boat with a pool and a huge slide. This sailing boat is super cool they use it in the America's cup.The sailing boats go super fast and you have to pedal so that the boat moves.

Measurement with a twist

Last week in Room 8 we tried something different with our maths to get better at our place value after the decimal point. We got to go outside and use chalk to measure our height, hand and arm span it was so much fun! We then measured these lines with a ruler to she how long each of these lines were. By measuring with a ruler we were able to look at numbers after the decimal point and see how to use these in a practical way! Check out our photos of this fun way of learning!!

Can He Save Her by Tehillah

One night a girl named Belle decided to go for a walk. Belle went walking through the streets towards her favourite cafe. As she was walking she could hear someone creeping up behind her. Before she knew what it was it was too late. This person behind her grabbed at her. This person wanted all of her money. So he took her to his lair. Belle tried to call the police but the guy had a gun in his hand so she dropped her phone on the ground. The attacker yelled “leave the phone or you die!” Belle cried “HELP ME! HELP ME!” Spiderman heard her cries for help. Spiderman burst through the window Bom! Bang! Spiderman took out the bad guy with on big kick. Spiderman took the bad guy to jail. Spider man turned to Belle and said “ there are dangerous people out there so be careful.” Spiderman and Belle became best friends. THE END

Now thats thinking!

This term as a school we are going to be exploring and learning about technology and how it has changed over time. Mr Burt started us off for the term by showing us how technology has changed over time at Pt England School. We got to see the first lot of technology that was used at our school and then what we have now it was pretty amazing how far we have come! Team 4 and Room 8 will be learning about what kinds of technology that Maori had before Pakeha arrived in New Zealand. That is our big question that we will be focusing on and there will be many exciting topics that we will cover. This week our writing task was to think about what our topic could look like this term. Please read our blogs and leave us some comments.

Year 5 & 6 Camp 2017

Last week our year 5 and 6 students had our 27th annual camp at Pt England School. It was so much fun we got to camp in tents at school and do all sorts of amazing activities! The weather was a bit windy so it made sleeping in the tents a little bit more exciting and noisey than normal. We had six different camp groups with each group having two year 6 students as their leaders.

We got to go kayaking, complete problem solving challenges with Mr J and Youthtown, go bike riding and prepare for the camp concert. We did these things and so many other great activities. On the last day we got to go to the swimming pools for the day and it was so much fun.

Room 8 and team four would like to say a massive thank-you to all of the teachers, parents and helpers that made camp possible for us! We had the most amazing time and we were so lucky that we had so many people helping us! Here are some photos of our camp as well as some of our recount writing we did this week. Hope you like our work please leave us a comment!

Marshmallow Challenge

We are currently learning about recount writing and for our experience we had a marshmallow challenge. Our teacher gave us 25 pieces of spaghetti, 91 cm of masking tape and one marshmallow. We had only 20 minutes to create the biggest freestanding tower that we could. Some of our towers worked and some of them didn't but we had so much FUN creating them. This experience gave us heaps of ideas to use in our recount writing.  Here are some of the pictures of us creating our towers:

We were in groups of three or four and had to try and work as a team to figure out what would be the best way to create our marshmallow tower.

There was lots and lots of concentration going on as the race was on to see who could make the tallest marshmallow tower.

Everyone in Room 8 literacy worked extremely hard to make sure that they had something build before the timer ran out!

This group of girls were our winners with their tower reaching a height of 43cm! We all tried our hardest and had so much fun in the process.
